Kevin T. Brumund, MD, is a fellowship-trained, head and neck oncologic, skull base, and reconstructive surgeon. After graduating from the University of Illinois, he attended medical school at Rush University in Chicago where he graduated in the top tier of his class with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his internship at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center and his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He finished his training with a Head and Neck, Microvascular, and Skull Base Surgery fellowship at University of California Davis Medical Center. In 2006, Dr. Brumund accepted a faculty position at the University of California San Diego Health System.

On faculty at UCSD for over nineteen years, Dr. Brumund rose to the rank of Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. His career was spent as part of the Hanna and Mark Gleiberman Head and Neck Cancer Center at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center and at the VA Medical Center San Diego, where he served as Chief of Head and Neck Surgery from 2010-2023.

During his tenure at UCSD, he published over forty-five peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters. Throughout his entire career he has taught medical students, residents, and fellows and has given over one hundred invited lectures within and outside of UCSD, both nationally and internationally.

An active member of the American Head and Neck Society and the American Thyroid Association, he speaks regularly at national meetings and has held leadership and committee positions in these and other societies and organizations. He has been selected as a San Diego Magazine Top Doctor twelve times, and a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and Best Doctors in America numerous times. He is recognized as one of the most competent and experienced head and neck surgeons in the region and is referred patients from other surgeons and health care providers throughout San Diego County and beyond.

Dr. Brumund is a board-certified head and neck surgeon whose practice is dedicated solely to the treatment of head and neck tumors. He has extensive training and experience in cancer surgery and specializes in treating both benign and malignant (cancerous) tumors of the head and neck. This includes tumors of the entire upper aerodigestive tract (mouth, throat, nose, sinuses, and voice box), salivary glands (parotid and submandibular), neck, skin, thyroid and parathyroid glands. A significant component of his practice is thyroid and parathyroid surgery. This includes extensive experience in thyroid cancer surgery and minimally-invasive outpatient thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

Dr. Brumund has additional training in the clinical use of point-of-care ultrasound, allowing him to assess exam findings, in real-time, while examining patients. He is a nationally recognized head and neck ultrasonographer who has participated in dozens of ultrasound courses over the years. He organizes and lectures in multiple national and international ultrasound courses annually.

He also has training and expertise in transoral robotic surgery for treatment of HPV-mediated cancer of the pharynx (throat) and is one of the few providers in the region to provide this service.

In 2025, Dr. Brumund joined The Advanced Head and Neck Surgery team of Drs. Mansfield and Garg at the Scripps Prebys Cancer Center. Dr. Brumund is thrilled to bring his expertise to Scripps and provide world-class care to patients in the greater San Diego area.
